While we have tried to make specific comments in the brief reviews, ratings, from K – KKKKK, are overall ratings, most heavily influenced by the food, but also factor in ambiance, décor and service. Our $ estimates are based on one dinner with a cocktail & tip. $ under $25; $$ from $26 to $35;  $$$ from $36 to $45; $$$$ from $46 to $60; $$$$$ over $60.

Keep in mind that in San Francisco , as everywhere, restaurants and clubs can open and close, change hours, credit card policies, and even move with very short notice. Many restaurants are closed Sundays and Mondays, or even Tuesdays.  We recommend calling ahead to address any special needs.  Feel free to mention Chuck Klein Productions.

Absinthe–398 Hayes St., at Gough St. (Hayes Valley) 415-551-1590 KKK $$$–Even if the place didn’t have great drinks, tasty brasserie food, and a killer chilled seafood menu, we’d like Absinthe because they give first-class treatment to late night diners.  We appreciate the chance to have a full service, satisfying dinner until 1am (especially in SF!).  Dinner and Lunch Tues-Sat.

Ace Wasabi’s–3339 Steiner St. , betw. Chestnut & Lombard Sts. ( Marina )415-567-4903 KK $$–Bingo with your sushi, anyone?  There’s a game every weeknight.  Unusual rolls (like the Flying Kamikaze - spicy tuna/asparagus wrapped with albacore and topped with garlic ponzu and scallions), an extensive sake menu, and loud music combine for a most-irreverent sushi outing.  Wine and beer only.  Open 7 days.

Acquerello–1722 Sacramento St. , betw. Polk St. & Van Ness Ave. (Polk Gulch) 415-567-5432 KKKKK $$$$–The décor is a little dated, but with modern twists like ravioli made from tomato and red chile pasta, filled with Asiago and ricotta and tossed with dry Gorgonzola, it’s our favorite Italian in SF.  If you’ve got the time, we suggest ordering the five-course tasting menu that’s complemented with selections from their renowned wine list.  Wine and beer only; jacket required.   Dinner Tues-Sat.

Aqua–252 California St. , betw. Battery & Front Sts. (Financial District) 415-956-9662 KKKKK $$$$–Under the direction of chef Laurent Manrique (from Campton Place ), beautiful Aqua continues to win raves for creativity and flawless preparation of exceptional seafood dishes.  Try the Hamachi with Avocado, Pine Nuts, and Ruby Red Grapefruit Vinaigrette; Brioche Crusted Halibut with tomato and Dungeness crab fondue and a lime mousse of sorts; or the fancy Lobster Casserole.  Lunch is a power scene.  Reservations a must and jackets recommended.  Dinner 7 days, Lunch Mon-Fri.  Valet parking at dinner.

Ana Mandara–891 Beach St., at Polk St. (Wharf) 415-771-6800 KKK $$$–We had a hard time buying celeb owners Don Johnson and Cheech Marin as restaurateurs, but were happily surprised by authentic (and even healthy!) Vietnamese food and stunning décor.  Talented Chef Khai Duong migrated north from L.A. ’s Le Colonial and the menu reflects his Cordon Bleu training with sophisticated dishes like Char Grilled Quail with Black Rice and Mushrooms.  Dinner 7 days; live jazz on weekends.

Azie–826 Folsom St. , betw. 4th and 5th Sts. (SoMa) 415-538-0918 KKK $$$$–You can choose a private curtained booth with its own dimmer switch (ideal for serious biz or funny biz), mingling at the hopping bar, or the mezzanine for watching all of the action.  Most of the buzz about Azie centers on the dramatic, flashy setting, but we like the Asian-inspired French cuisine.  Be warned – choosing a caviar starter or one of the tasting menus will quickly bump you into the $$$$$ zone.  Dinner and DJ nightly.

B44–44 Belden Pl. , betw. Bush & Pine Sts. (Financial District) 415-986-6287 KKK $$–They offer nine varieties of paella, but we’ll stick with the B44 version that includes Chorizo, chicken, shrimp, squid, mussels, clams, green peas and red bell pepper... Olé!  The authentic Catalan offerings also include meat and fish entrées and an extensive selection of appetizers.  Dinner Mon-Sat, Lunch Mon-Fri.

Beach Chalet Brewery & Restaurant–1000 Great Hwy. at the western edge of Golden Gate Park betw. Fulton & Lincoln ( Ocean Beach ) 415-386-8439 KK $–If you make it for sunset, the awesome beach view and home-brewed beers make for a sublime evening.  The food is a far second to the view and beer, so play it safe with burgers.  Live jazz on Tues & Sat nights.  Open daily, 8am - Midnight .

Betelnut Pejiu Wu–2030 Union St. , at Buchanan St. (Cow Hollow) 415-929-8855 KKK $$–A Southeast Asian roadhouse, and the road is Union Street .  A festive cocktail menu complements delicious Pan-Asian tapas-style street food at this crowded still-hot spot.  We loved the Lamb and Beef Samosas with Mango-Tamarind Chutney and our Banzai Martinis (Skyy vodka with a splash of sake!).  Dinner and Lunch 7 days.

Bix–56 Gold St. , betw. Montgomery & Sansome Sts.(Financial District) 415-433-6300 KKK $$$$–This glam supper club offers live music seven nights a week, along with a menu that manages to feel luxe and comforting at the same time.  Think Deviled Eggs with Housemade Steelhead Caviar; Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Dungeness Crab Meat; and the house specialty, Chicken Hash.  They usually offer a nice selection of locally harvested veggies, too.  Dinner 7 days; Lunch Mon-Fri.

Bizou–598 Fourth St. , at Brannan St. (SoMa) 415-543-2222 KKK $$$–This “little kiss” of a spot serves delicious, sophisticated French bistro food in a relaxed atmosphere.  Fans recommend the beef cheeks, but we’re stuck on the cassoulet of duck confit with lamb sausage and bacon.  Their gourmet pizzas make a great lunch, too.  Dinner Mon-Sat, Lunch Mon-Fri. CLOSED FOR RENOVATION UNTIL MAY 2005

Boulevard–1 Mission St., Steuart St. (Embarcadero) 415-543-6084 KKKKK $$$$–Always at the top of SF restaurant lists, Boulevard’s decadent menu, attentive staff, and extensive wine list are sure winners.  Innovative chef Nancy Oakes never skimps on ingredients and it shows in dishes like Pyramid Ravioli (Kobe Short Rib & Caramelized Salsify, Shaved Black Truffles, Braising Jus & Parmesan) and a bouillabaisse of jumbo prawns, sea bass and sea scallops.  Sit in the back room for intimate conversation, the middle to observe the kitchen action, or up front for the bar scene.  Dinner 7 days, Lunch Mon-Fri.

Café Jacqueline–1454 Grant Ave. , betw. Green & Union Sts. ( North Beach )415-981-5565 KK $$$–Sweet soufflés, savory soufflés, and solely soufflés are served in this restaurant reminiscent of a French country inn.  Choose your dining companion carefully because each airy egg creation serves 2-4 and takes some time to rise.  Try the prosciutto and mushroom combo, and if you manage to save room for dessert, make it the Grand Marnier soufflé. Wine and beer only.  Dinner Wed-Sun.

Café Kati–1963 Sutter St. , betw. Fillmore & Webster Sts. (Japantown) 415-775-7313 KKK $$$–Cozy neighborhood bistro that maintains a loyal following with inventive food and stellar presentations.  The menu changes monthly, but a recent favorite was Chef-owner Kirk Webber’s dazzling Jasmine Tea Smoked Salmon with san bai sue sauce, gailan (Chinese broccoli), and coconut ginger rice.  Wine and beer only.  Reservations required.  Dinner Tues-Sun.

Campton Place–Campton Place Hotel, 340 Stockton St. , betw. Post & Sutter Sts. ( Union Square ) 415-955-5555 KKKK $$$$$–Swiss-born Chef Daniel Humm does more with foam than Starbucks.  His haute French flavors ring familiar, but innovative techniques bring surprising intensity to each dish.  Best examples:  Cappuccino Parsnip Soup with Crispy Sweetbreads and White Truffle Oil; Glazed Atlantic Monkfish with Citrus-Emulsion and Capers; and Variation of Bartlett Pears, Chestnuts, andChocolate.  Prix fixe dinner and lunch.  It’s expensive, but unforgettable.  Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner 7 days.

Chapeau! –1408 Clement St. , at  15th Ave. (Inner Richmond ) 415-750-9787 KKK $$$–The enthusiasm of owner and sommelier Philippe Gardelle makes Chapeau! one of our favorites.  We were surprised by the robust wine list (400+) at this neighborhood French, and delighted by the cooking.  The crab and avocado appetizer with a “Creamsicle” vinaigrette is so good that you’ll be tempted to order another instead of an entrée.  But then you’d miss the roasted duck with pecan risotto, spinach, baby carrots and cranberry grain mustard.  Wine and Beer only.  Reservations recommended.  Dinner Tues-Sun.

C & L–1250 Jones St., at Clay St. (Nob Hill)415-771-5400 KKKK $$$$–Aqua’s owners (Charles & Laurent) opened this beefy tribute to the steakhouses of eight American cities late in November 2004 and the gimmick (perhaps in spite of itself?) works:  start with Miami’s Grilled Cuban Sandwich Napoleon or Atlanta’s Black-eyed Pea Salad and Shrimp Hush Puppies; travel West to Denver and a Rib-Eye flavored with Coffee Dry Rub; and reroute through NOLA so you can finish up with Bananas Foster.  The variety of sides and veggies tantalizes:  Cheddar Grits with Vidalia Onion Bouillon; Sweet Potato Gratin with Ginger and Pecan Praline; Creamed Spinach with Parmesan and Nutmeg; and Wild Mushroom Fricassée.  Dinner Tues-Sat.

Chez Nous–1911 Fillmore St. , betw. Bush & Pine Sts. (Upper Fillmore) 415-441-8044 KKK $$$–Tasty Mediterranean tapas is the draw at thiscrowded hot spot.  Most popular little plates are lavender sea salt-crusted lamb chops and pomme frites.  We like the warm olives and fresh bread at the bar.  Wine and beer only.  Dinner Tues-Sun, Lunch Wed-Sun.

Citizen Cake–399 Grove St., at Gough St. (Hayes Valley) 415-861-2228 KKK $$–We hear they serve lunch and dinner, but we can’t imagine wasting time with the savory when there are so many tempting sweets at Citizen Cake.  Our very favorites included Mount Fuji (a green tea mousseline with cherry mousse and black sesame meringue); 3-Rice Pudding Tart; Corn and Blueberry Parfait; Warm Cherry Sauté with a Manhole Cover of Puff Pastry; and the Hazelnut on Chocolate on Hazelnut on Chocolate confection.  Sweets are served all day long, 7 days a week.

Clementine–126 Clement St., at 1st Ave. (Inner Richmond ) 415-387-0408 KKK $$–Très bien.  This friendly French spot consistently delivers satisfying bistro fare… smoked trout, tilapia, beef bourguignon, at surprisingly affordable prices.  Dinner Tues-Sun.

Delfina–3621 18th St. , betw. Dolores & Guerrero Sts. ( Mission ) 415-552-4055 KKK $$$–With just four or five pasta and entrée options, Delfina can focus on serving those delicious choices with friendliness and style.  The kitchen relies on local ingredients for the simple Northern Italian menu, and turns out winners like Grilled Fresh Calamari with Warm White Bean Salad; Tagliatelle with Pesto, Potatoes, and Green Beans; and Local King Salmon with Sweet Corn, Chanterelles, and Basil Aoili.  Warning:  it’s always packed.  Dinner 7 days.

Dottie’s True Blue Café–522 Jones St., betw. Geary & O’Farrell Sts. (Tenderloin) 415-885-2767 KKKK $–We love breakfast at Dottie’s.  A down-home coffee shop that turns out big plates of stick-to-your-ribs cooking.  All baking is done on the premises and their sticky buns can get just about anyone out of bed early to beat the crowds at Dottie’s.   Closed Tuesdays, all other days 7:30am-3pm .

Ebisu–1283 Ninth Ave., at Irving St. (Inner Sunset) 415-566-1770 KKK $$–The accommodating sushi chefs will prepare rolls to order, but we don’t imagine you’ll be thinking up anything wilder than their Dinosaur Feet, Two Balls No Strike, or Hanukkah Roll.  LOVE the Pink Cadillac:  a scallop wrapped in fresh salmon.  Fresh, fresh fish draws crowds, so don’t be surprised by the waits.  Note:  Ebisu has an outpost in SFO’s Terminal G… quite a step up from Au Bon Pain!  Dinner and Lunch, 7 days.

Farallon–450 Post St. , betw. Mason & Powell Sts. ( Union Square ) 415-956-6969 KKKK $$$$–The fabulous, over-the-top décor does not outshine the delicious seafood at Farallon.  The daily “coastal cuisine” (their word, not ours!) menu always includes creative surprises like a Carpaccio of Maine Diver Scallops; Roasted Atlantic Cod with butter beans, sugar snap peas, cider braised pork, and tangerine gremolata; Seared Hawaiian “Ahi” Tunu with foie gras mousse, beluga lentils, hedgehog mushrooms, and port wine.  We also like the bistro menu that takes advantage of the raw bar, and the delishdelish desserts.  Valet parking at dinner.  Dinner 7 days, Lunch Tues-Sat.

Fog City Diner–1300 Battery St. , at The Embarcadero (Embarcadero) 415-982-2000 KK $$–Just plain good food in a retro diner setting.  Ok, not all of it's plain:  the Sloppy Joe is made from Ahi tuna and your Mom's mac n' cheese has been updated with Gouda , Hobb's ham, and English peas.  The Yukon Gold fries are always a darn good idea.  Dinner and Lunch 7 days.

Foreign Cinema–2534 Mission St. , betw. 21st & 22nd Sts. (Mission) 415-648-7600 KK $$–Dinner and a (couple of) shows!  Along with a Cal-Mediterranean menu, they screen foreign flicks out on the balcony and there’s a hipster parade at the dining room indoors.  It’s always colder than you think in SF, so bring a jacket if you’re eating outside.  (Check www.foreigncinema.com to see what’s playing.)

(North Beach) 415-399-0499 KKK $$$–A great spot for Italian in hopping North Beach, especially for an al fresco lunch.  Rose Pistola makes an effort to accommodate all tastes:  daily fish selections are offered with a choice of preparations and pasta dishes like the delicious porcini ravioli with mascarpone and treviso are offered in two sizes.  Dinner and Lunch 7 days.

Roy's–101 Second St., at Mission St. (SoMa) 415-777-0277 KKK $$$$–SF is a fitting setting for renowned Hawaiian chef/restaurateur Roy Yamaguchi’s fusion cuisine.  We especially like the lunchtime Bento "Box Lunch" which offers tastes of six house favorites like shellfish potstickers, Chinese chicken salad, and miso yaki butterfish.  Dinner 7 days; Lunch Mon-Fri.

Rubicon–558 Sacramento St., betw. Montgomery & Sansome Sts. (Financial District) 415-434-4100 KKK $$$$–Oenophiles will delight in master sommelier Larry Stone’s award-winning selection; if you’re on your own dime, there’s a list of “40 Under $40”.  The polished New French is perfect for a business dinner.  We’ve never spotted any of the celebrity owners (Francis Ford Coppola, Robin Williams & Robert DeNiro), but there’s always that chance!  Dinner Mon-Sat, Lunch Mon-Fri.

Slanted Door–1 Ferry Plaza, at Market St. (Embarcadero) 415-861-8032 KKK $$$–Slanted Door opened in its new location in 2005 without missing a beat.  No longer an “in crowd” secret, Chef-owner Charles Phan’s modern Vietnamese is still way trendy and always packs a crowd. The menu changes weekly, but always includes delectably different spring rolls and tasty crepes.  Wine and beer only.  Dinner and Lunch Tues-Sun.  (The Mission location on Valencia St. will re-open in 2005.)

Swan Oyster Depot–1517 Polk St., betw. California & Sacramento Sts. (Polk Gulch)673-1101 KKK $
–The freshest and best no-frills seafood in town.  You’ll feel like a sailor when you sidle up to the counter for oysters on the half-shell, Dungeness crabs, and clam chowder.  You’ll quickly realize why the friendly Sancimino brothers (you’ll find them shucking on the other side of counter) won the prestigious James Beard award for Regional Restaurant.  Dinner and Lunch Mon-Sat.  Remember, we said “no frills”.

Tadich Grill–240 California St., betw. Battery & Front Sts. (Financial District)415-391-1849 KK $$–For a taste of old-time SF, you can’t beat Tadich Grill, reputed to be the oldest restaurant in continuous operation in California (since 1849).  They specialize in charcoal-grilled fish, but nostalgia is the real draw here.  Of Tadich Grill, Cary Grant said, “Twill never change, nor shouldn’t.”  Dinner and Lunch Mon-Sat.

Tartine Bakery–600 Guerrero St., at 18th St. (Mission) 415-487-2600 KKK $–We say “oui, oui!” to Tartine’s fabulous French pastries:  Lemon Cream Tarts, Dark Chocolate Eclairs, Crème Caramels… By the way, you can have a lovely Croque Monsieur here, too.  Breakfast and Lunch 7 days (open until 8pm)

Ten-Ichi–2235 Fillmore St., betw. Clay & Sacramento Sts. (Pacific Heights) 415-346-3477KKK $$–Pristine sushi is the draw at this family-owned spot, but homey Japanese cooking is a treat as well.  If raw fish isn’t your thing, try savory stews served in cast-iron pots or the beef negimayaki.  Lunch Mon-Thurs, Dinner 7 days.

Thep Phanom–400 Waller St., at Fillmore St. (Lower Haight) 415-431-2526 KKK $$–In a city full of excellent Thai options, Thep Phanom stands out for its upscale decor, solicitous service, and bold flavors.  Unfortunately, the word is out and it’s seriously crowded.  Reservations recommended.  Dinner 7 days.

Tokyo Go Go–3174 16th St., betw. Guerrero & Valencia Sts. (Mission) 415-864-2288KKK $$–Saketini, baby.  If Austin Powers went for sushi, he’d go go here.  And stand in line with the rest of the hipsters who love the groovy color scheme and fresh sushi.  Menu favorites include the unique Duck Duck appetizer:  four slices of medium rare duck nigiri are served with a duck and spinach salad.  Dinner Tues-Sun.

Ton Kiang–5821Geary Blvd., betw. 22nd and 23rd Aves. (Outer Richmond) 415-387-8273 KKKK $–Hugelypopular, this Chinese restaurant draws crowds for authentic dim sum on the weekends.  Décor and ambiance are minimal, but the food is superb.  Try mango pudding for dessert.  Wine and beer only.  Dinner and Lunch 7 days.

Town Hall–342 Howard St., at Fremont St. (SoMa) 415-908-3900 KKKK $$$-$$$$–Voted San Francisco Magazine’s “Best New Restaurant of 2004,” Town Hall owes its success to its food-lovers’ menu.  We don’t care which of the two brother chefs (Michael & Stephen Rosenthal) came up with Warm Bakewell Cream Biscuits with Smithfield Ham and Pepper Jam; we’re in love.  Dinner 7 days, Lunch Mon-Fri.

Universal Café–2814 19th St., betw. Bryant & Harrison Sts. (Mission)415-821-4608 KKK $$–Universal keeps their New American menu short and sweet.  A few choice selections include Seared Beef Tenderloin with French green beans and gorgonzola mashed potatoes, and Free Range Chicken cooked under a brick with cranberry beans and broccoli rabe.  Dinner 7 days, weekend brunch.

Yank Sing–49 Stevenson St., betw. 1st & 2nd Sts.  (SoMa) 415-541-4949; 101 Spear St., betw. Howard & Mission Sts. (SoMa) 415-957-9300 KKK $$–With two convenient locations, this accessible dim sum is some of the best in the city.  Yank Sing’s a little expensive for dim sum, but the sliced Peking duck and snow pea leaves dumplings (among the 80-odd choices) are sublime.  Lunch only, 7 days.

Zuni Café–1658 Market St., betw. Franklin & Gough Sts. (Hayes Valley) 415-552-2522 KKKK$$$–Zuni’s chef Judy Rodgers attracts a very, very cool crowd with her delicious, simple Mediterranean fare like roasted chicken and house-cured anchovies.  After more than 25 years, the downstairs tables are still the place to be seen in SF.  Dinner and Lunch Tues-Sun.
